Glacier Suites Hotel at Waterton Lakes National Park

Filed Under Hotel Review, Waterton Lakes Hotels | Leave a Comment

Waterton Lakes National Park – Beautiful and Grand
If you’ve never been to Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, you’re missing a rare opportunity to see a World Heritage Site that is relatively untouched by people. The park is part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, located on the joining Provincial borders of Alberta and British Columbia, as well as the Canadian and United States International boundary.

Although Waterton is well known for it’s summer adventure, hiking and lakeside fun, I was able to visit during the winter. Locals will tell you that the population goes from thousands in the summer to a little more (or less) than 100 during the winter. If you like quiet solitude, you’ve found your place. Some things that are available during the winter would be snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and even ice climbing for the daring out there.

Located in the heart of the village, the Glacier Suites Hotel is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the best mountain air Alberta has to offer. The hotel is centrally located in Waterton Lakes just one block from the Waterton Lakes Opera House (Movie Theatre), ice cream shop, coffee bar, Pat’s Waterton convenience store and the Waterton Pizza restaurant. It’s also only a two block walk to both the childrens park and the lake shore.

Glacier Suites Hotel Review
While they have a number of room types available, I was able to stay on the ground floor in a deluxe two-room suite. As I learned from their website, the suite has approximately 600 square feet of space with a living room (including a pull out sofa bed) and a separate bedroom with one King or Queen bed. The room also had a fireplace which was a nice way to relax in the evening.

One of the great benefits to staying at the Glacier Suites Waterton is the complimentary breakfast. Although the space is very limited, we never had trouble getting in and having a nice hot meal. The staff was really nice and helped us with information about the park.

As you would expect, rates jump significantly once the summer arrives. While winter off-season prices range from $99 to $169 for a loft suite, they climb to $225 to 289 during the summer. Remember, these rates do not include fees, taxes and other government and tourism charges. Make sure you call ahead to find out the real cost. Also, if you’re considering going at any time during the year, reservations are highly recommended!

My only complaint during the stay would be with the temperature in the room. I was unable to get the heater to slow down so I got very hot at night. My only option was to open the window and front door every couple of hours to let cold air in. Although I never recommend keeping a hotel room open, for some reason, in the middle of winter in Waterton, I was never really concerned that someone may try to enter. I guess that’s what happens when there is only you and a few others in the entire hotel!

All in all, the Glacier Suites Waterton is an excellent place to stay when you’re in Waterton Park. Although it’s not a cheap stay, it is one of the only places to stay during the winter. Their summer rates are very comparable and fall right in line based on their quality and amenities. If you really want to splurge, make sure to check out the article about the Prince of Wales Hotel.

From the Glacier Suites website, amenities in the deluxe double room include:

* 1 queen or king size bed in the bedroom
* double pull-out sofa bed in the living room
* 4-piece bathroom
* Jacuzzi bathtub
* white goose down comforters
* air conditioning
* TV/DVD
* satellite TV
* telephone
* microwave
* mini fridge
* coffee maker
* hair dryer
* iron and ironing board
* inroom safe
* 100% smoke free & pet free

Nine Fine Irishmen Pub at New York New York hotel – Las Vegas

Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

I just wanted to post a quick update from a recent trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. After a number of dining experiences it’s great to report back on a “quick stop” meal I had.

My group and I stopped at Nine Fine Irishmen in New York, New York hotel Las Vegas for a mid-afternoon snack and drink. Inside the restaurant, the feeling is very Irish pub-like with celtic symbols, dark colors, a large wooden bar – everything you would come to expect. Although I was there during a slow part of the day, I would expect that it could get very entertaining during the evening.

Onion Rings at Nine Fine Irishmen Las Vegas

The Food Recommendation
If you go, you really must have the onion rings. They are massive, well cooked and they have the most amazing mustard on the side that you’ll be craving them months afterward! As you can see from the picture, the rings come a metal square serving tray in some white butcher paper. Actually, the image doesn’t do the onion rings justice because they were huge.

My only regret is that we didn’t make a comment about the serving staff. After waiting a short while just to order drinks, we then sat another 10 minutes waiting for our beer (I added a pint to make the entire experience more authentic.) It seemed a little rushed and even when I asked the bartender about it he said that I would just need to wait for my server. This was a little disappointing…

Although the food experience made up for much of the service problem, it was really the company that made it enjoyable.

I recommend you make a stop (of your many during the day or night) at Nine Fine Irishmen at New York New York in Las Vegas if only to try out the rings and mustard!

Obama to visit the Waldorf Astoria – a true Presidential Suite

Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

Once again the presidential suite at the Waldorf Astoria hotel is taking its name literally.

President Obama will be checked into the hotel suite throughout the United Nations General Assembly meetings this week.

This room has had its share of fame over the years as Obama is another in a long line of presidents to stay at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Don’t worry, while Herbet Hoover probably made about $7,000 a year, that’s what Obama will be paying each night of the conference.

Now that’s a guy who knows how to find a deal!

Sri Lanka holiday rates just went up

Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

The government is forcing Sri Lanka holiday travellers to pay a little more for their vacations this year. Tourism is booming in Sri Lanka since the end of violence there and this has caused an ever-increasing price war in the area.

In an attempt to attract foreign visitors, Sri Lanka holiday providers have drastically reduced their rates on a nightly stay. In fact, some of the discount hotel rates have gone so low that smaller hotel and motel chains have barely had the cash flow to survive.

The government of Sri Lanka has set a minimum hotel rate of 90 dollars for a luxury hotel and a rate of 40 dollars for cheaper stays. The government decided to impose the new rate minimum in an effort to keep smaller vendors in business and allow everyone to make money during this boom in business.

What’s next?
Isn’t this an interesting experiment for the country? While the small hotels are now able to charge the same rates, there is nothing to say that the larger chains will not make “side offers” to ensure they have a steady stream of business. Free night stay with 3 nights paid? Complimentary towel, bath robe or wine? Only at the ones that could afford it in the first place.

Although there is probably no point in trying for a discount hotel coupon with the rate minimum – it wouldn’t be a bad idea to ask what other perks you can get for the price.

Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel

Filed Under Edmonton Alberta Hotel review | Leave a Comment

Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel
I stayed at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel for business about 2 weeks ago and I would say that I had a slight mixed review.

One thing that sticks into my mind is on the internet drop. I was in the middle of completing a business assignment when the internet was lost. I called the desk and they said that the password had changed. Of course, they didn’t know what it was. The front desk agent told me that he would finds out immediately and call me back. There was no call so I was out of luck for the evening (luckily the Champions League was on TV.)

The room was fairly clean and the bed was well made and comfortable. I ended up staying on the 21st floor of the hotel which had a nice view of the city. I was originally put on the 4th floor but my room was at the same level as the roof of the next building. I didn’t feel all that safe so they moved my up (for a fee of course.)

My recommendation: this is the nicer of the two Coast Hotels in Edmonton. The rooms were nice for the price; however, the service could have been a little better (although it was a freak password change that the agent had no control over.)

Saving Money here

Coast Hotels has a frequent stay card so sign up before you go so your first visit is included on the card.

Coast Edmonton Pros

  • Decent room for the rate ($134 includes buffet breakfast)
  • Nice view of the city from each room
  • Friendly staff – front desk and cleaning people
  • Comfortable beds (King Size)
  • Pool and workout area

Coast Edmonton Cons

  • Internet quit working and could not be fixed
  • Original room (4th floor) was at a roof level (unsafe?)
  • Pool closes at 10:00pm so no late swim

How to Save Money on a Hotel Room

Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

All types of hotels – including expensive and luxury – will have extremely expensive rates if you accept the first one that is presented to you. Frequent travellers have learned many ways to get great deals on hotel rooms and some of the methods can be suprisingly simple. For more, read Bargains, Hotels and Everything Else.

Use the Internet
There are dozens of websites that offer great ways to save money. These sites are sometimes linked right into the local system so they know when deals come up! When making a reservation through these systems, just make sure that the final rate you receive is the same as the one quoted. If you’re being charged a fee, try calling the hotel directly.

Off the Beaten Path
If you’re truly interested in saving money, you may want to expand your options away from the traditionally most popular hotel chains. There are many smaller, well maintained hotels and motels available in most cities and generally these will offer lower rates. Check online for any comments about the hotel so you have a fairly good idea of what to expect. If you’re still uncomfortable, try calling a local business to ask them what they’ve heard.

Negotiate!
One more way to save money is to use everyone’s favorite – negotiation. If you have stayed with the hotel before, have a frequent traveller’s card or are making larger reservations make sure to ask for a reduced rate.

If you’re out of options with the above, you can fall back to simply asking the hotel reservations about any discounts that are available. Let them list the clubs or other specials that get a reduced rate and go for that one. You would be suprised what will actually get you a discount!
